Mommy's Home

Shhh... it's me again, don't tell mommy and daddy that I have been on the computer again, I am supposed to be asleep in my crib, but I wanted to give you all an update.

I am so happy, my mommy came home yesterday from her "business trip to Texas". I went to school in the morning, but shortly after lunch, daddy picked me up. I was wondering what was going on because he rarely picks me up early and coming to get me so early meant I didn't get to take my afternoon nap or play with my friends. Daddy said we were going to go to the airport again but I was not quite sure what he was talking about, I kept thinking "What's the airport?"

We went back to the place where I had last seen mommy, maybe daddy thought she got lost amongst all those people that were walking around. Instead of looking for mommy, daddy just stood there holding me and trying to get me to look at through this big window that seemed to just look into another room where people were sitting down. I looked at all of the people that were sitting down, but I didn't see mommy so I decided that I would look at my toes because they were moving around and they were more interesting than all of those people.

After awhile, daddy was tapping on the window trying to get me to look up, but my toes were still capturing my attention. Then I looked up and there was my mommy, right in front of me, and she had tears in her eyes. She gave daddy and I a hug and then took me from dad's arms and was giving me kisses, I sure did miss mommy kisses. After she quit hugging me so tightly, and I was able to catch my breath, I gave her a big smile to let her know that I was happy to see her which made her cry even more.

I don't know what she was doing at that place, was she just walking around looking for us all the time she was away? Mommy must have been scared if she got lost at this "airport" all that time. Once I can talk better I think I need to tell mommy to not wander off when we are at the airport, and then she won't get lost for several days and won't have to say she was on a "business trip". Maybe we should put a GPS tracker on her so she doesn't get lost again.

So far this has all been about my mommy getting lost, but I want everyone to know that my daddy took such good care of my while mommy was lost at the airport. Dad and I got to spend quality guy time together, and I know that if mommy gets lost again, I will be in very capable hands. Thanks for taking good care of me daddy.

I love you mommy and daddy,
BudBud

Day Three

Pssst… It’s me, BudBud, again. Boy, daddy needs to keep his computer locked up if he doesn’t want me playing on it. Well, I wanted to update everyone on how well daddy is being “Mr. Mom”. He’s doing okay, I guess. I mostly wanted to tell mommy just how much I love and miss her!!

I couldn’t sneak down here last night, sometimes daddy watches like a hawk! It’s irritating! I hope he eases up soon.

This morning I woke up about 5:15am. I’m not too sure of the time… because I can’t tell time yet! What do you guys expect outta me? I’m only 10 and a half months old for crying out loud. Anyway, I didn’t hear daddy moving around yet, so I decided to continue with my language lessons for my sheet animals. I kept this up for a while, but they STILL do not answer me. Maybe I’m doing this all in vain. I thought I heard daddy so I figured I’d continue my lessons until he came up and got me. He took too long so I fell back to sleep. When I woke up again, it didn’t take him long to come get me. My diaper was soiled (number 2) so daddy changed me and then gave me my morning bottle. Since I fell back to sleep we didn’t have much time to play around ‘til we had to go to school. Well, _I_ went to school and daddy went to work. I think I have much more fun at school than he does at work.

Before I knew it, I looked up and there was daddy. I love seeing my parents pick me up; I get such a big smile from them. I guess that’s because I smile at them first. Teacher said I didn’t nap very well, the snitch, but I ate pretty well.

When we got home, daddy tricked me into lying on his lap. The next thing I knew, I was waking up in my bed. How did he do that? Well, I called out to daddy and he came and got me. When we got downstairs, he said it was time for me to eat and put me in my highchair. He had everything ready; squash and fruit medley. I thought I was going to starve. Daddy couldn’t feed me fast enough. He should have known because I opened up my mouth instead of trying to dodge the first bite. I ate all of my squash and about three-fourths of my fruit. Daddy gave me my bottle and I gobbled it up.

After I ate, daddy and I played while we talked to mommy. Daddy says that I smiled real big when I heard mommy. I couldn’t see her but daddy said she was in this little box. I wonder why she got in there. I didn’t think she’d fit. I don’t think _I_ would fit.

Time sure flies when I’m home with mommy and daddy because daddy was changing me into my night clothes quicker than I thought. I knew it was time for my night bottle because daddy got the boppy in position. I think he goes in slow motion on purpose when it’s night time. I cried that I was not happy with waiting for the bottle. He pulled me up and gave me my bottle. After I was finished, I thought it would be a good time to show daddy how well I clap. I was so excited. He wasn’t too excited. He kept telling me it was time to go to sleep. I wasn’t quite tired, so I tried to climb over daddy’s shoulder. That didn’t work very well. He must know Jujitsu or something because in a blink, I was on his other arm in a sleep position. I tried to tell him, I’m not ready for bed, so I tried burrowing. He said something about it being an hour of this and I was getting put in my crib. “What?!” I thought “he’s just going to plop me in my bed?” Sure enough, that’s what he did. I started calling his name in the most pathetic tone I could muster, but he must have put something in his ears so he couldn’t hear me. I must have drifted off to sleep because it’s really dark now while I’m writing this.

Well, I wanted to update mommy on how I was doing. I better get back to bed before daddy hears me.

I love you, mommy.

It's me, BudBud

Shh… Don’t tell daddy but this is BudBud. I wanted to update the blog since he doesn’t seem to find the time to do it. Today mommy flew to Texas for work. She was very upset. I hope she’s feeling better now. I sure do love her. Anyway… daddy took me to the car and we headed home. I fell asleep and woke up in my bed. I thought I’d strike up a conversation with the animals on my sheets. They don’t respond. I’m not sure if they speak my language, but I keep trying.

Daddy came and got me and took me downstairs. He took me in to change my diaper. It didn’t smell very good (but it was warm). He said something about a 2 alarm diaper and that it was up my back. After some maneuvers with my clothes, he was able to get me all cleaned up. He decided that since it was close to me eating again and shortly would be bed time, he’d just let me run around in my diaper. He put me in my high chair and got my food ready (Apples and Chicken). I ate a few bites pretty good but then I figured I was being too good and didn’t want to spoil dad, so I didn’t cooperate. He didn’t give me my fruit. I wasn’t too pleased about this but mommy said that if I don’t eat my veggies, I don’t get any fruit. What’s up with that? It is food isn’t it? Daddy put me in my bottle position and I had a bottle.

After I had my bottle, I started playing. Daddy and I had a good time but he kept insisting that I quit playing with the papers on the coffee table. We played for a while but I wanted to go to bed early. He didn’t want me to go to sleep yet, but _I_ insisted that it was time for me to go to bed. Daddy and mommy calls it hitting the wall.

Well, I better go back to bed before daddy catches me on the computer. I love you mommy and daddy!

Time Is Flying By

So, today BudBud is 6 months old. We took some pictures of him so hopefully we'll get them online this weekend.

We cannot believe that it's been 6 months since we first held him. It's been the quickest 6 months of our lives. I'm sure in 6 years we will look back and say it's been a quick 6 years.

He's almost sitting up on his own. He's rolling over at will and when we go up to get him in the morning, he's on his belly. He's still sleeping through the night. There are times we wake up and can hear him on the baby monitor cooing and gabbering to himself. We wait a little bit and he soon falls back to sleep. We figure if he was hungry or something, he'd let us know. He can go from happy and giggling to "I'm starving and I'll die in 1 minute if I don't have a bottle". When he's in this stage, there is NO giving him food; only a bottle will do.

A new milestone is in the works. BudBud is spending the night at Grandma and Grandpa's house. This will be the first time mom has been away from the little guy. Going to be VERY interesting.

That's it for now.

Yellow and Orange Foods (Mar 8)

Jonathan started eating yellow and orange vegetables this evening. Based on Connie's recommendation, his first vegetable for us to try with him was sweet potatoes. He wasn't too sure of the sweet potatoes in the first couple of bites, but then he decided that he liked the flavor and texture and was all albout getting more of them. Here is the link to the first of the eight pictures of his first experience eating vegetables. (picture) He did make a little bit of a mess, but what can you expect for a 6 month old.

Drama at Daycare (Feb 19th)

We had our first "incident" at school today.

One of the older children, Jeremiah, was reading a book to BudBud and showing him the pictures when the book fell and hit BudBud in the face. When the book fell, he ended up with a little bruise on the left side of his mouth and a couple of superficial scratches under the lower left side of his mouth (link to picture) BudBud was fine and was just smiling and looking around, but Jeremiah was so upset that he had hurt BudBud that he threw the book in the trash. Connie, the teacher, said that it took about an hour and a half for Jeremiah to calm down from the incident. It probably did not help that Drew got mad at Jeremiah because he thought that he hurt BudBud on purpose and would not talk to him for awhile. Drew is 4 1/2 years old and loves BudBud and is so excited when he sees him.

Luckily Connie was able to rescue the book that had been the cause of all of this drama.

Parents are not as much fun as Pre-Schoolers

BudBud has been going to 'school' (our word for his daycare) for three weeks now and we could not be more pleased. There are nine other children at the school, one of the nine is another baby and the other eight are under kindergarten age.

Since he has been going to school, it seems that mom and dad are not energetic enough to keep him entertained throughout the day on the weekend and the recent holidays. I guess that two forty plus year olds do not provide the visual and mental stimulation that eight children between the ages of one to six do.

The children love enteracting with the babies. The primary teacher allows the kids to help feed the babies once the baby is over five months old and she has a sign-up sheet for the children to sign-up to take turns helping feed the babies. From the reports we have been given, they are patiently waiting till BudBud turns five months so they can help feed him, but they have another month and a half to wait.

He is learning 'Baby Sign' at school so we are getting the same books for home so we can work with him also and reinforce what he is learning there and so we will understand what he is 'saying' when he signs to us when he gets a little older. He also enjoys sitting with the other children during art and singing circles and really likes listening signing by the teachers and the other children.

We consider ourselves truly blessed to have found his school.

God is good.

First Christmas

Last week, we took BudBud to the mall and had his pictures taken with Santa. He did very good and did not cry when we sat him on Santa's lap. Of course, he is too small to tell Santa what he wants for Christmas but it was one of those things that mom wanted done.

Throughout this week, mom dressed him in all of the somewhat mandatory "baby's first Christmas" clothes. The logic was that he had to get them worn this week because he would never have his first Christmas again. There will be pictures posted in all of his various outfits. He looked very cute in all of his outfits but I think he got a little tired of modeling for us.

We had a wonderful first Christmas with BudBud. We know that he won't remember his first Christmas when he grows up, but we enjoyed making the memories that we will be able to tell him about when he gets older.

BudBud gave daddy a small scrapbook that he made (with a little help from mom). The scrapbook had "Father" as a cut out for the cover and it contained pictures of daddy and baby, a couple of three generation photos of baby, daddy and grandpa and then some pictures of BudBud. Daddy was very touched with the gift.

Over the years I have notice that it is funny how gifts that require assembly or have to be untangled from all of the packing that them come in, automatically go to dad after getting opened for dad's "magic touch" to make them available for the child to play with. Daddy got this privlege this year to assemble the jumperoo, and to unpack the toys that BudBud received.

No matter what we received under the tree, the best gift we received this year is the blessing that God gave us in this wonderful child. We have truly been blessed with him becoming part of our lives and look forward to many more years and many more Christmas' with him.

God is good.

3 Months Old Today

Well, it's been a while since I've added anything to this blog. There has been quite a few things happen.

The most recent is that BudBud is exactly 3 months old today. We cannot believe it. Mom had a little breakdown this morning because she wanted to spend today with him. We both have to work, so that was out of the question. She survived.

He's slept through the night 3 out of the last 4 nights. It was very nice. We try to get him into bed about 8, but it ends up being somewhere around 9. He starts making little cooing noises about 5am. We don't jump up and grab him, we let him coo for a while. When he can't stand it anymore, he'll start crying. Dad gets up and changes him while mom prepares to nurse. I hand him off to mom and I jump in the shower. We're getting a routine going.

The other milestone we had this past was that mom went back to work. It was a rough Wednesday last week. We found a wonderful daycare that is more than just a daycare. It's a Montessori type of daycare. The lady has 10 kids that her and her husband take care of. There are only 2 babies and the others are up to Kindergarten age. She's been doing it for 29 years and she has children of children that she's taken care of. We are truly blessed to find her.

I need to post more pictures and I hope to have them up before the week is up.

'Til then,
God is Good.

Two Months old today.

We cannot believe it’s been two months since our little bundle of joy was born. We cannot believe the way he’s changed, how he’s grown and the personality that is starting to emerge. He rolled over a few weeks ago (November 1, 2008, to be exact). He’s smiling at mom and dad. He smiled at me yesterday when I was tickling his feet.

Speaking of yesterday, I’ve learned we (mom and dad) need to keep an extra set of clothes for ourselves in the truck along with Bud-Bud’s extra clothes. It’s amazing how much that little guy can expel when he has a mind to it.

Since it’s his 2-month birthday, we need to get some more shots of him. We want to have one of those picture frames that have the 12 cutouts. Normally, it’s used for school pictures, but I want one for each month of his first year. Then we’ll do the whole school picture thing. Which makes me wonder; is there something that has 19 or 20 openings? From Birth to Graduation?? Hmm… Maybe I’ll make one. :)

Don’t use your kids as an alarm clock.

So, last week Bud-Bud’s feeding schedule was to be at 2am and 6am. Just before 6am he made a large pseudo-cry. I got up to get the morning going but he was still fast asleep. I decided to lie back down. About 5 minutes later I hear movement and sound coming from his crib. I hold off on getting up because we don’t want him to get into the habit of making just the smallest of peeps and we come running. So, I’m thinking that since his feeding is at 6, he’ll start yelling for his food any minute and then I’d get up, change him and pass him off to mom so I can get ready for work. Well I fell back to sleep, woke up and looked at the clock. It was 7:15. I usually LEAVE the house by 7. Oops. I jump up, get him changed and hand him off to mom. Now, I have to see how quickly I can get ready for work. Needless to say, I was late.

Our babies are what WE eat

Another fine mess we've got ourselves into. This afternoon the wife wanted to have Chipotle for lunch. She got her normal burrito bowl with pork, mild (tomato) salsa, rice, black beans and guacamole. I got something similar. We like the bowl because we can mix up the ingredients so we don't take a bite of the normal burrito and have a mouth full of nothing but rice.

Anyway....

We had a good afternoon, after the baby's feeding he was alert and just looking around. We enjoy this because we can see just how he's pulling everything in. It was time for another feeding and the wife just got through eating a meatless taco soup we like. It has various ingredients including tomatoes, beans, refried beans, corn, etc.

We head off to church and we're thinking the car ride will knock him out so we can attend class without baby interference. Nope, this was not to happen, he just looked around. The people at church were amazed that 1) the wife was moving around so soon after a C-section (just 6 days ago) and 2) the baby was alert and quiet. He did start to get a little fussy at about 45 minutes into the class so I went to the back of the classroom to bounce and hold him so he wouldn't disturb the class. He did go to sleep.

When we got home it was time for his 9 o'clock feeding. The feeding went well as they have been lately (see previous post). After the feeding, we put him down and his eyes opened up. No big deal, I watched his little eyelids start to and finally close. About 15 minutes later I pass the bassinet and it looks like his eyes are open. I take a closer look and sure enough, they're open. Now I'm a bit concerned as he hasn't had more than 2 "awake and alert" times in a day.

The wife gets him up and he is VERY gassy. Painfully gassy. "Why is this?" we're wondering. She holds the baby and I go and start to clean the kitchen. This is when I throw away the Chipotle bowl. Crud!! We had BEANS for lunch today. Now we remember that we were told that broccoli can make a baby gassy if mom eats it and is nursing. We let slip that beans are a gassy food. We're in for a long night and it's all our fault. As the writing of this (12:41 am) we're about to put him back to sleep after his midnight feeding. It looks like we might be out of the woods, but I don't want to jinx ourselves. So much for my previous post about getting 2 hours of sleep between feedings.

Live and learn.

Feeding Frenzy

My wife and I have decided to breastfeed our son. This is a natural thing that has been around from the beginning of man. So, why does this "natural" thing seem unnatural??

The first night we had a couple of feedings that didn't go as smooth as we'd like. We had to call in a nurse for assistance. We thought that this was just a bad night. The next night the 1 am feeding was just like the night before, difficult. So we just thought some feedings were going to be harder than others. When we get home, most of the feedings are difficult. We had to "finger feed" a couple of times. This involves the wife pumping breast milk, we draw it up in a syringe and attach a feeding tube to it and run it along our finger as the baby sucks the finger. While the baby is sucking, we slowly depress the plunger to put milk into the baby's mouth. We can tell that he is not getting as much as he would at a normal feed. We had to call a "lactation specialist". She met us Sunday at 5:30. After my wife demonstrated her technique and the baby's response, it was pretty clear that the baby hadn't quite learned what he needed to do. He was doing something wrong with his tongue and couldn't grab the nipple. The consultant suggested that we use a "breast shield". Some say these are just plain "evil." When I told the consultant this, she'd explained that the shield should only be used for a very short period of time, just enough time to teach the baby that the breast is where the food is. We're going to use it for another day or two and then try to wean him off of it.

Well, after he got a good latch, he nursed for about 30 minutes on that sitting. This was the start of going from almost fighting him to latch to him latching within a minute (far from the 30-40 minutes of the past). Now he's eating every 3 hours and is having regular stools and urine filled diapers. I never thought I'd actually WANT to see a soiled diaper. You see, the diaper is the gauge on how well the baby is getting fed via the breast. With bottle fed babies, you can see how much he is taking in because you are the one that created the bottle and can monitor what he's eating. With the breast, you have to go by the pull and the feeling of the breast after the feeding. Anyway, one should see at least 6 wet diapers and 2 stools in a 24 hour period. If this is happening, the baby should be getting enough milk from mom. Since we started keeping track of how long he feeds and his diaper count, we can tell that he is doing just fine.

Now we set the alarm for every 3 hours, if he wakes up before this we go ahead and feed him, if he's not awake, we wake him to feed. This is what our doctor has told us. And we must not go for more than 4 hours without feeding him. So, when the alarm goes off or his alarm goes off we change him, feed him and get him back into bed and all within about an hour. Now we can get about two hours of sleep between feedings. Right now, that's enough, but we will see.

God is good

Listen To The Voice of Experience

So, last night my wife is talking to my step-mom on the phone. When the wife hangs up, she tells me that she and dad are coming down tomorrow (today at the time of this post) and they are bringing us some food. I told her "This isn't a funeral" hinting at how people take food to morners to help them in their hour of need. I'm thinking, we had a baby, we're good.

Listen to the voice of experience.

This morning they show up and I have a different take on the brought food: I'm hungry!! Why, because we have been concentrating on the new baby that we forgot or didn't have time to eat ourselves. BTW: breast feeding is NOT as easy as it sounds. By the time we got our little one down for a nap after this last feeding, it had been 22 hours since I'd eaten. I had tried to fix something last night after we put him down for a nap, but he only stayed asleep for as long as it took me to cook what I was going to eat. Once we got him fed and back down, I couldn't even smell what I'd cooked because it made feel sick.

So, listen to those that have been down the path that you're about to travel, it will make the journey much easier.

Thanks Karen and Dad, you may never know how much that ment to us.

So, right now both mom and myself have eaten and baby is sleeping (hopefully for another 2 hours then we'll have to get him up for another feeding).

All of this feeding sounds like we're feeding him too much, but we're breastfeeding and the experts say to feed 8 - 12 times in a 24 hour period. The baby doesn't take in as much as a normal bottle so he'll tell us when he's ready.

God is good.

From Educated to Dunce in 2 minutes

So, how do you remove 6 combined degrees from two people (An associate, 3 bachelors and 2 Master)??

Add a screaming child into the mix. This is what happened this morning. Mom and I are trying to feed the baby. Nothing we (by “we” I mean her, I’m just standing around feeling worthless) did seemed to help. He just wouldn’t eat but was crying like he was hungry. “Maybe we’re trying to feed him when he’s not hungry,” I said. So, we let our little bundle of joy fall asleep and have HIM tell us when he wanted to eat. After all, he ate REALLY well at the last feeding.

An hour later and he wakes up. Nothing really has changed. He just won’t take the nipple. He’s getting so frustrated, mom is getting frustrated and dad is just watching the whole thing like some doomed circus. We had to call in the nurse to assist. She came in and somewhere around thirty minutes later he FINALLY starts taking in milk.

So, now, mom and I are talking about what we need to do over the next few days. What else do we have to do right now (2:45 am)? This is why coffee was invented!!

On a more uplifting note: We are taking him home today!!!

We cannot wait!! We’ve waited MANY years for him and we are truly blessed!!

God is good (all the time)

Day Two

Good morning, world.

This morning we woke up and Jonathan is doing good. He has been remarkably good so far. He started looking around on day one. I know newborns cannot see much past a few inches, but he just looks around taking as much as he can in.

Mom is doing good. She's not in much pain and she walked around the hospital unit yesterday afternoon. Today they're going to let her take a shower. She's looking forward to that.

I'm doing pretty good. I think my chest is going to burst with pride everytime I look at him. I have to hold back tears of happiness multiple times throughout the day. "He ate good." Hold back tears.

"Look at his grandpa holding him."

Hold back tears.

"Look how he cuddles with his mom."

Hold back tears.

"Just look at him."

Hold back tears.

God is good.

He's arrived.

My son was born today. We have waited for him for a long time. I had all but given up hopes of having a child, let alone a son.

I have a son.

He came into this world by C-Section. He weighed in at 9 lbs 5 oz and 21.5 inches. Not a small child. I joked with his mommy that he's jumped right into the 3-6 month clothing completely bypassing "Newborn."

Right now, he's sleeping beside me in his mobile bassinett at the hospital. He's very handsome. His mom keeps calling him beautiful and I keep telling her that "beautiful" is for girls and "handsome" is for boys. She ignores me (and his grandma ignores me, too, for that matter).

If you follow this link, you'll see a few pictures of him. http://community.webshots.com/album/567101646DnJAED?vhost=community

That's it for now.

Cheers,
Bill

And So It Begins...

Here we go... This is going to be the blog spot to inform friends and family about our son, Jonathan. His name, Jonathan, is an English version of the Hebrew word for "Gift of God" or "Given By God". Gift of God was taken as a address for the blog, but "GivenByGod" was not, so, this is his spot.

Today, we had a 4D ultrasound and we saw the face of this small bundle of joy. We had it at Pernatal Imaging (http://www.prenatalimaging.com/) in Kansas City. Our sonographer was Jeanette and she was very good. I highly recommend her.

His mom (my wife of 21 years) has confessed to me that she almost cried when she saw him. I didn't, I was smiling way too big!! He didn't move around as much as the sonographer wanted, but we did get some pretty good images. I'll put some of them on here if I can figure out just how to do it. For more 4d pictures follow this link.... http://family.webshots.com/album/564215973HDzkML?vhost=family

Well, it looks like I figured it out.
I'm going to close for now.
To all: peace and God's grace.
Me
